Since the time of the prophet Elijah, Mt. Carmel in Israel has been a holy place. The Carmelite monks, who are now spread throughout the world and who trace their lineage back to the Old Testament, traditionally hold that it was one of their own, St. Simon Stock, who received a visit and a brown scapular from Our Lady.

Carmelites have had a deep devotion to Our Lady since their inception in early Christianity, and the gift of the scapular sacramental has been a way for both laypeople and religious alike to share in both the devotion to Our Lady as well as the promises she has made to those who wear the scapular, remain chaste in their state of life, and pray the Rosary.
