Saint Padre Pio was a friar and mystic who became well-known for experiencing the gift of stigmata throughout his life. He received the name Pius or Pio in Italian when he joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. He is the patron saint of civil defense volunteers and the patron saint of the village of Pietrelcina.

Padre Pio while praying before a cross received the stigmata, the first priest ever to be so blessed. As word spread, the priest himself became a point of pilgrimage for both the pious and the curious. He wa reportedly able to read the consciences of those who held back during confession. Also, reportedly able to bilocate, levitate, and heal by touch.
