Saint Francis de Sales Medals

Do you know a writer or journalist? They would love to wear a Saint Francis de Sales medal to remind them of the power of the written word.

Saint Francis de Sales received an excellent education as his father, a prominent French lawyer, expected Francis to serve as an attorney, in his father's footsteps. Francis earned his law degree and his doctorate but the footsteps he followed were not that of his earthly father but that of the Lord Our Father.

Francis became a priest and with his fine intellect and gentle personality went to Italy and converted many Calvinists to Catholicism. He became well known for his gentle demeanor and his written and spoken word.

With the attention of Rome, Francis became bishop of Geneva. Here he worked in cooperation with monasteries to promote the Catholic faith in a predominantly Protestant area.

His two books, one for lay people called Introduction to the Devout Life and one in the mystical realm called Treatise on the Love of God are still highly valued.

He is called "the Gentleman Saint" and his feast day is on January 2th. He is the patron saint of the Catholic press, deaf people, writers, and journalists.
