About St. Florian
St. Florian (250-304 AD) was a Roman soldier and commander of the imperial army in the Roman province of Noricum (modern-day Austria). During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian, Florian refused to execute Christians and openly professed his own faith in Christ.
According to tradition, when a fire broke out in a town, Florian extinguished it with a single bucket of water while praying. This miracle led to his association with firefighters and protection against fire. He was eventually arrested for his faith, and when ordered to offer sacrifice to Roman gods, he refused. He was tortured and ultimately martyred by being thrown into the river Enns with a millstone tied around his neck.
