Why is Saint Sebastian the Patron Saint of Athletes?

St. Sebastian is best known today as the patron saint of athletes, but his story is one of the most dramatic in the early Church. A Roman soldier who kept his Christian faith secret, he was shot full of arrows on the emperor's orders, survived, and then walked back to confront the emperor a second time. His courage under torture is why athletes, soldiers, and anyone facing a hard fight have looked to him for centuries. The Church keeps his feast on January 20.

Catholic Faith Store carries St. Sebastian medals made for specific sports — soccer, baseball, basketball, football, and hockey — in sterling silver, along with St. Sebastian sports bracelets, rosaries, and prayer cards: a meaningful gift for athletes, coaches, and teams.

Who was St. Sebastian?

Sebastian was born around 256 A.D., raised in Milan, and came to Rome as a young man to serve in the army. He rose quickly and became a captain in the Praetorian Guard, the emperor's own bodyguard, under Diocletian, one of the fiercest persecutors of Christians in Roman history. What the emperor did not know was that Sebastian was himself a Christian.

He used his position quietly and at great risk. He visited Christians held in prison, encouraged those about to be martyred, and brought many people to the faith, reportedly including Roman officials and their households. For a time his secret held. When it was finally discovered, Diocletian felt betrayed by a soldier he trusted and ordered him executed.

Sebastian was tied to a post and shot with arrows by a squad of archers, who left him for dead. But he did not die. A holy woman named Irene, the widow of another martyr, came to recover his body for burial and found him still breathing. She took him in and nursed him back to health.

Most men would have fled the city. Sebastian did the opposite. Once he had recovered, he went and stood before Diocletian to rebuke him to his face for his cruelty toward Christians. This time the emperor had him beaten to death with clubs, and his body was thrown into a sewer. Fellow Christians recovered it and buried him in the catacombs along the Appian Way, where the Basilica of San Sebastiano Outside the Walls stands over his tomb today.

Why is St. Sebastian the patron saint of athletes?

The connection comes from his physical endurance and the image that has represented him for centuries. Surviving a volley of arrows took extraordinary strength, and the picture of a strong, young soldier standing firm under that kind of punishment naturally spoke to athletes. His story pairs bodily strength with spiritual strength, which is exactly the combination an athlete of faith hopes to live out: training the body hard while keeping the soul rooted in God.

That is why so many Catholic sports teams, coaches, and young players take him as their patron. They ask his intercession for strength, safety, and the perseverance to keep going when a season, or a life of faith, gets difficult.

What else is St. Sebastian the patron saint of?

Athletes are only part of it. Because he was a soldier, Sebastian is also a patron of soldiers, guards, and archers. For much of history he was best known as a protector against plague and epidemics. In the Middle Ages, sudden illness was often pictured as arrows striking without warning, and the saint who had survived the arrows became one of the great intercessors people turned to in times of disease. He is counted among the Fourteen Holy Helpers, the saints invoked for protection against serious illness.

How is St. Sebastian shown in art?

You have almost certainly seen him, even if you didn't know his name. St. Sebastian is nearly always painted as a young man bound to a tree or column, his body pierced with arrows. Artists across the centuries used him to show both martyrdom and human vitality, which is part of why he remains so tied to strength and the athletic body. When you see a saint tied up and struck with arrows, that is Sebastian.

Devotion to St. Sebastian

His feast day is January 20, a fitting time for a team blessing or a family celebration of an athlete's patron. Many people carry a St. Sebastian medal in a gym bag or wear one on the field, keep his prayer card handy, or pray a sports rosary before a game. However you do it, the heart of the devotion is the same: asking for the strength to compete and to live your faith with the same courage he showed.
