Our Lady of Fatima — The Apparitions of 1917
Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared six times to three young shepherd children — Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto — in the Cova da Iria near Fátima, Portugal. She came in a time of world war, revolution, and suffering, and she brought three great messages: the call to prayer and penance, devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart as the path to world peace.
On October 13, 1917 — the day of the final apparition — approximately 70,000 people gathered in the Cova da Iria and witnessed the Miracle of the Sun: the sun appeared to spin, change colors, and plunge toward the earth before returning to its place in the sky. It remains one of the most documented miraculous events in modern history. Francisco and Jacinta Marto were canonized by Pope Francis in 2017. Sister Lucia survived until 2005, her life a testament to the message she received as a child.
