About St. Amelia of Maubeuge (7th Century)
St. Amelia was a Benedictine nun who became abbess of Maubeuge Abbey in present-day France. She was known for her deep prayer life, her care for the poor and sick, and her miraculous healing powers. According to tradition, she had a special gift for healing arm pain and injuries, and farmers would invoke her intercession for good harvests and protection of their crops and animals. Her feast day is celebrated on July 10th, during the height of the growing season.
Why Farmers and Workers Invoke St. Amelia
Farming is physically demanding work that often leads to arm pain, repetitive strain injuries, and bruises from hard labor. St. Amelia, who understood the connection between physical suffering and spiritual growth, became the patron saint of those who work with their hands and arms. She is also invoked for good weather, bountiful harvests, and protection of livestock—making her the perfect patron for all who depend on the land for their livelihood.
