"O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."
— The Miraculous Medal Prayer, revealed by Our Lady to St. Catherine Labouré, 1830
What Is the Miraculous Medal?
The Miraculous Medal is one of the most beloved and powerful sacramentals in the Catholic Church. On November 27, 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Labouré, a young Daughter of Charity novice in Paris, France. During this vision, Our Lady stood upon a globe with rays of light streaming from her hands, surrounded by the words: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."
Mary instructed Catherine to have a medal struck with this image, promising: "All who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck. Graces will abound for those who wear it with confidence."
Since 1832, when the first medals were distributed, billions have been given away worldwide, and countless miracles, healings, conversions, and answered prayers have been attributed to wearing this medal with faith. It became known as the "Miraculous Medal" because of the extraordinary graces associated with it.

The Miraculous Medal Prayer & Novena
The Miraculous Medal Prayer
"O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."
This prayer is traditionally prayed three times while kissing or touching the Miraculous Medal. Many Catholics pray it morning and evening, or in moments of need.
Miraculous Medal Novena
A nine-day novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal is traditionally prayed beginning November 19th, ending on her feast day November 27th. You can also pray this novena any time you need Mary's powerful intercession for a specific intention.
St. Catherine Labouré — The Visionary
St. Catherine Labouré (1806–1876) was a French Daughter of Charity who received the vision of the Miraculous Medal at age 24. Despite the extraordinary nature of her visions, Catherine lived in humility and obscurity for the rest of her life — never revealing she was the visionary until her deathbed. She spent 46 years caring for the elderly poor in a hospice in Paris, quietly wearing the very medal she had helped bring to the world. Her feast day is November 28th. She was canonized in 1947, and her incorrupt body rests in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Paris, where the apparitions occurred.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Miraculous Medal need to be blessed?
Yes — all sacramentals should be blessed by a priest to receive their full spiritual benefit. Bring your Miraculous Medal to your parish priest and request the blessing of religious articles. Many priests offer a special blessing specifically for Miraculous Medals. A blessed medal becomes a sacred object protected by the Church's prayers.
What size is best for everyday wear?
This 1" x 5/8" size is ideal for daily wear — substantial enough to show beautiful detail and make a statement of faith, yet comfortable enough to wear all day under or over clothing. It is the most popular size for Miraculous Medals, striking the perfect balance between visibility and wearability.
Can non-Catholics wear the Miraculous Medal?
Yes. Many conversions to Catholicism have begun with receiving a Miraculous Medal. Anyone can wear it and benefit from Mary's intercession. Throughout history, countless non-Catholics have experienced graces, healings, and eventually conversion after wearing the Miraculous Medal with an open heart. Mary's love extends to all people.
What's the difference between this and other Mary medals?
The Miraculous Medal specifically commemorates the 1830 apparition to St. Catherine Labouré and features the unique design Mary herself requested. Other Marian medals — Our Lady of Guadalupe, Lourdes, Fatima, and others — honor different apparitions and titles. The Miraculous Medal is unique in its universal promise of graces and its role in affirming the Immaculate Conception dogma 24 years before it was defined.
Should I choose sterling silver or gold?
Sterling silver is traditional, affordable, and perfect for daily wear — the most popular choice. Gold filled offers warm gold tones with excellent durability at great value. Solid gold is investment-quality for heirloom gifts and milestone sacraments. Choose based on your budget and whether you prefer silver or gold jewelry.
What is the scalloped border design?
The scalloped border is a decorative edge design featuring curved, shell-like indentations around the medal's perimeter. This traditional styling adds elegant dimension, catches light beautifully, and creates a more ornate, classic appearance compared to smooth-edge medals. It is a timeless design element that enhances the medal's beauty.
When is the Miraculous Medal feast day?
The feast of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal is November 27th, commemorating the date of the first apparition in 1830. Many Catholics wear their Miraculous Medal especially on this day, pray the novena, and attend special Masses. It is also a wonderful day to gift a Miraculous Medal to someone you love.
How do I care for my Miraculous Medal?
Sterling silver: Polish with a silver cloth when tarnished — this is a natural process. Gold filled: Wipe with a soft cloth; minimal maintenance needed. Solid gold: Very low maintenance. For all metals: Remove before swimming or showering to preserve the finish. Store in a soft pouch when not wearing. With basic care, your medal will last a lifetime.
