The Liturgy of the Hours is the official daily prayer of the Catholic Church — the ancient rhythm of morning, midday, evening, and night prayer that priests, religious, and laypeople have prayed in common for two thousand years. Christian Prayer is the one-volume edition that brings this sacred tradition into the hands of every Catholic: complete texts for Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Night Prayer, selections from Daytime Prayer and the Office of Readings, and the full collection of Hymns and Music for the Liturgy of the Hours, all in a single portable volume.
If you have ever wanted to pray in union with the whole Church throughout your day — not only at Mass on Sunday, but at dawn, at dusk, before sleep — this is the book that makes it possible. Built almost entirely on the Psalms and the great prayers of Scripture and tradition, the Liturgy of the Hours is the heartbeat of Catholic prayer. Christian Prayer is where most Catholics begin, and where many stay for a lifetime.
This edition includes the current St. Joseph Guide for Christian Prayer and Inserts for Christian Prayer to help you navigate the liturgical calendar with ease.
What Is the Liturgy of the Hours?
The Liturgy of the Hours — also called the Divine Office — is the Church's official cycle of daily prayer, celebrated at set hours throughout the day and night. Rooted in the Jewish tradition of praying at fixed hours, it was taken up by the early Christians and has been prayed without interruption ever since. The Second Vatican Council called it "the prayer of the whole People of God" and encouraged all the faithful, not only clergy and religious, to pray it. When you open Christian Prayer and pray Morning Prayer at sunrise or Compline before sleep, you are praying in unison with every priest, monk, nun, and layperson doing the same across the entire Catholic world.
