About the Devotion
The devotion comes from a painting made around 1700 by Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner for the Church of St. Peter am Perlach in Augsburg, Germany. It recalls the words of St. Irenaeus: "The knot of Eve's disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary." A young Jesuit priest, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, saw the painting while studying in Germany in the 1980s and brought the devotion home to Argentina. As Pope Francis he helped spread it around the world.
