Some crucifixes are devotional objects. This one is a devotional statement. The Ornate Standing Crucifix with Base in Silver-Tone combines antique silver-tone metal with a deep red enamel backing, radiating sunburst rays bursting from the center of the cross, and Baroque-style scrollwork and shell motifs covering every arm, the stem, and the base — producing a crucifix of extraordinary visual presence that commands any space it occupies. At 13 inches tall and 8 inches wide, it stands as the natural centerpiece of a home altar, prayer table, mantle, bookshelf, or desk — anywhere a visible sign of faith belongs.
The INRI banner crowns the top of the cross above a finial of acanthus leaf detail. The corpus of Christ is rendered in high relief in bright silver-tone against the red enamel field, the sunburst rays framing him on all sides — an image that recalls the great sanctuary crucifixes of historic European churches. Against the red enamel, the silver-tone corpus and rays create a striking contrast that the gold version does not — bold, crisp, and arresting. The detachable four-footed base is itself a work of ornamental craft, with acanthus scrollwork and curved feet across its platform. Display it freestanding on its base, or remove the base to mount or display as needed.

Red Enamel Backing A deep, rich red enamel field covers the full face of the cross behind the corpus. Against the silver-tone metal, the contrast is particularly vivid — the red draws the eye immediately to the figure of Christ. Red has been the liturgical color of martyrdom and the Precious Blood of Christ since the earliest centuries of the Church. |
|
Radiating Sunburst Rays Silver-tone rays radiate outward from the center of the cross in all directions, surrounding the corpus with light and glory — an iconographic tradition rooted in the symbolism of Christ as the Light of the World (John 8:12). Against the red enamel, the silver rays have exceptional visual impact. |
|
Baroque Scrollwork & Shell Motifs Every cross arm terminates in an ornate Baroque finial — acanthus scrollwork, shell reliefs, and floral rosette medallions cover the arms, the stem junction, and the base of the cross. This level of decorative detail is characteristic of the great devotional objects of 17th and 18th century European Catholicism. |
|
Corpus of Christ A high-relief corpus in antique silver-tone metal, INRI banner above, arms outstretched — rendered with the anatomical detail and devotional seriousness appropriate to the central mystery of the Christian faith. |
|
INRI Banner Inscribed on the titulus at the top of the cross — Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" — the inscription Pontius Pilate ordered placed on the cross (John 19:19). |
|
Detachable Four-Footed Base The ornate base features acanthus scrollwork, four curved feet, and a stable platform that holds the 13" crucifix securely upright. The base detaches cleanly, allowing the crucifix to be displayed without it or mounted as a wall piece if desired. |

Silver-Tone or Gold-Tone — Which to Choose?
Both versions of this crucifix share the same Baroque design, dimensions, and red enamel backing. The difference is in the character of the finish. The silver-tone creates a crisper, higher-contrast look — the bright silver corpus and rays pop dramatically against the deep red enamel, giving the crucifix a bold, graphic quality that reads strongly from across a room. The gold-tone has a warmer, more luminous character — the antique gold and red enamel evoke the richness of traditional Catholic sacred art and candlelit sanctuaries. Both are equally beautiful; the choice comes down to whether your space and taste lean toward cool, bright elegance or warm, antique richness. Both versions are also available in our store.

The Crucifix in Catholic Tradition
The crucifix — a cross bearing the corpus of Christ — is the central sacred object of Catholic devotion and the defining symbol of the Christian faith. Unlike a bare cross, the crucifix insists on the full reality of the Incarnation and the Passion: God became man, suffered, and died. The Church has always taught that keeping a crucifix in the home is an act of faith, a reminder of the price of our redemption, and an invitation to unite our own sufferings with those of Christ.
The sunburst or "glory" crucifix — with rays radiating from the center of the cross — has deep roots in Catholic sacred art, particularly in the Baroque tradition of the 17th and 18th centuries. The rays represent the divine glory of Christ even in the moment of his greatest humiliation: the cross is not only an instrument of death but the throne of a king. The red enamel behind the corpus — the color of the Precious Blood and of martyrdom — deepens this theological statement. This is not simply a cross. It is a proclamation.
