Do you love the look of yellow gold jewelry? Who can blame you? Gold has been with us for centuries as a symbol of beauty, permanence, and devotion. But solid 14K gold is expensive, and most budgets can't stretch to a solid gold medal or crucifix. The good news is that you have two excellent alternatives, gold-filled and gold plated, and understanding the difference will help you choose the right piece for your needs and your budget.
What is 14 Karat Gold Jewelry?
Pure gold is 24 karat, meaning 24 out of 24 parts are gold. It is beautiful, but in its pure form it is too soft for jewelry. Jewelers mix gold with other metals such as copper, silver, nickel, zinc, and palladium to make it strong enough to wear. A 14KT piece is 14 parts gold out of 24, or 58.3% pure gold.
Solid 14KT gold will not tarnish or fade. It is the heirloom standard, the piece your grandchildren will wear at their own Confirmations. It is also the most expensive option by a wide margin.
What is Gold-Filled Jewelry?
Gold-filled is the next best thing to solid gold, offering excellent quality at a fraction of the price.
When you purchase a gold-filled piece, you are buying a substantial layer of 14KT (or 12KT) gold that has been pressure bonded to a base of sterling silver or another metal. Gold-filled jewelry is regulated by the U.S. government: each piece must contain at least 5% gold by weight, and it must be stamped accordingly. That is many times more gold than any plated piece.
Because the gold layer is so thick, gold-filled jewelry resists flaking and rubbing far better than plating and can look beautiful for decades with reasonable care. Every gold-filled item at Catholic Faith Store is stamped and made in the USA.
What is Gold Plated Jewelry?
Gold plating uses electricity or a chemical process to bond a thin layer of gold to a base metal. It is the most affordable way to get the warm look of gold, and here is the part most jewelry blogs skip: not all gold plating is created equal. Thickness matters enormously.
Consider two examples from our own catalog, both made by McVan, an American religious jewelry maker:
- 14K gold plated sterling silver carries roughly 20 mils of gold plating over a solid sterling silver base. That is a heavy plate over a precious metal, and with proper care the finish holds up well for years.
- 14K gold plated pewter carries 2 to 4 mils of gold plating. It is a lovely, budget-friendly option, but the thinner layer means it needs gentler handling.
An inexpensive fashion piece from a mall kiosk may have a plate thinner still, over a copper or mystery base metal, and that is where the horror stories of green skin and gold rubbing off in weeks come from. A quality plated religious medal from a reputable American maker is a different product entirely.
One honest caveat: all plated finishes, even heavy ones, are subject to normal wear. The gold can gradually soften in color or wear at contact points over years of daily use. This is normal wear, not a defect, and good care habits dramatically extend the life of the finish.
Which Should You Choose?
- Solid 14KT gold: the once-in-a-lifetime gift. Baptisms, First Communions, and Confirmations where you want a true heirloom.
- Gold-filled: everyday devotional wear with the look of gold and decades of durability, at a fraction of the cost.
- Gold plated: the beautiful budget option, ideal for children, teens, occasional wear, or anyone who wants the warmth of gold without the investment. Choose heavier plating over a quality base when you can.
How to Care for Your Gold Jewelry
Solid 14KT and gold-filled: Keep away from harsh chemicals and chlorine. Clean with a few drops of mild soap in warm water, rinse, and pat dry. You can also polish gently with a jewelry polishing cloth.
Gold plated (all types): The goal is to protect that gold layer.
- Remove before bathing, swimming, exercising, or sleeping
- Avoid contact with lotions, perfumes, sunscreen, makeup, and chemicals. Put your jewelry on after applying personal care products
- Store separately in a soft pouch to prevent scratches
- Clean only with a soft, dry cloth. Never use silver dips, jewelry cleaners, polishing compounds, or abrasive cloths, and avoid heavy rubbing. These will cut right through the plating
Whichever you choose, a gold medal or crucifix worn daily is a quiet witness of faith. We are happy to help you find the right one. Call us at (800) 625-4610 with any questions about a specific piece.
