The 1531 Apparition
In December 1531, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego, a humble indigenous Mexican convert, on Tepeyac Hill near Mexico City. Speaking to him in his native Nahuatl language, she asked him to tell the bishop to build a church on that site. When the bishop demanded a sign, Mary instructed Juan Diego to gather roses from the hilltop (where roses did not grow, especially in December) and present them to the bishop. When Juan Diego opened his tilma (cloak) to show the roses, the miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was imprinted on the fabric—an image that remains to this day.
