The San Damiano Cross
The San Damiano Cross is a 12th-century Byzantine-style painted crucifix that hung in the small church of San Damiano near Assisi, Italy. In 1205, while praying before this cross, a young Francis of Assisi heard Christ speak to him: "Francis, go and repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruin." This moment changed Francis's life and led to the founding of the Franciscan Order.
"Rebuild My Church"
At first, Francis thought Christ was asking him to physically repair the crumbling church of San Damiano, which he did by begging for stones and rebuilding it with his own hands. Later, he understood that Christ was calling him to rebuild the entire Church through spiritual renewal, poverty, and radical following of the Gospel. This call continues to inspire Christians today to rebuild the Church in their own time.
The Symbolism of the San Damiano Cross
Unlike traditional crucifixes, the San Damiano Cross is rich with Byzantine symbolism:
- Christ Triumphant - Jesus is depicted not in agony but in glory, eyes open, victorious over death
- The Witnesses - Mary, John, Mary Magdalene, and others stand at the foot of the cross
- The Ascension - At the top, Christ ascends to the Father, showing the resurrection
- The Rooster - Symbolizing Peter's denial and repentance
- The Angels - Six angels surround Christ, representing heaven's witness to the crucifixion
- The Saints - Various saints and figures from Scripture surround the cross
St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis (1181-1226) is one of the most beloved saints in Christian history. After hearing Christ's call before the San Damiano Cross, he renounced his wealth, embraced radical poverty, and founded the Franciscan Order. He is known for his love of creation, his stigmata (wounds of Christ), and his complete devotion to living the Gospel. His feast day is October 4th.

The Church of San Damiano
The original San Damiano Cross still hangs in the Basilica of St. Clare in Assisi, Italy. The small church of San Damiano, which Francis rebuilt, later became the home of St. Clare and her Poor Clares. It remains a pilgrimage site where visitors can pray in the same place where Francis heard Christ's call.
Christ Triumphant
The San Damiano Cross depicts Christ not in suffering but in triumph. His eyes are open, His arms are outstretched in welcome, and He stands victorious over death. This image reminds us that the cross is not the end of the story but the beginning of our salvation and resurrection.
