About St. Aidan of Lindisfarne (590-651 AD)

St. Aidan was an Irish monk from Iona who was sent to evangelize the kingdom of Northumbria in northern England. In 635 AD, he established a monastery on the island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island), which became the center of Christianity in northern England. From there, he traveled throughout Northumbria on foot, preaching the Gospel, building churches and monasteries, founding schools, and training missionaries. He was known for his extraordinary humility, his love for the poor (he often gave away gifts from the king to those in need), and his gentle approach to evangelization. His flaming torch symbolizes the light of Christ he brought to pagan England.

Why St. Aidan Matters Today

St. Aidan's approach to evangelization—marked by humility, compassion, and walking alongside people rather than imposing from above—remains a powerful model for bringing Christ to the world today. He reminds us that the best evangelization happens through authentic witness, sacrificial love, and meeting people where they are. His legacy lives on in the countless churches, schools, and monasteries he founded throughout England.
