About St. Barbara
St. Barbara (died circa 306 AD) was a virgin martyr who lived during the reign of Emperor Maximian. According to tradition, her pagan father Dioscorus locked her in a tower to preserve her beauty and protect her from suitors. While imprisoned, Barbara converted to Christianity and had three windows installed in her tower to honor the Holy Trinity.
When her father discovered her faith, he was enraged and turned her over to the authorities. She was tortured for refusing to renounce Christ, and when no one would execute her, her own father beheaded her. Immediately after her martyrdom, he was struck by lightning and killed - leading to her association with protection from lightning, fire, and sudden death.
