About St. Gregory the Great
St. Gregory the Great (540–604 AD) was born into a wealthy Roman family and used his considerable fortune to build monasteries in Rome and Sicily before entering religious life himself. Elected Pope in 590, he became one of the most influential figures in Church history, sending St. Augustine of Canterbury to evangelize the Anglo-Saxons and reforming the liturgical music of the Church. Gregorian chant bears his name as a testament to his enduring legacy in sacred music. He was declared a Doctor of the Church and is one of only two popes given the title "the Great."
