About St. Hannibal Mary Di Francia (1851-1927)

St. Hannibal was born in Sicily to a noble family but felt called to serve the poorest of the poor. Ordained a priest in 1878, he was deeply moved by the plight of orphaned and abandoned children in the slums of Messina. He founded orphanages, schools, and trade workshops to rescue children from poverty and give them hope and dignity. He also founded two religious congregations—the Rogationist Fathers and the Daughters of Divine Zeal—dedicated to promoting vocations and praying for workers in God's harvest. His life's mission was based on Jesus' words: "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest" (Matthew 9:37-38).

The Rogate Prayer

St. Hannibal taught the world the importance of the "Rogate" (Latin for "pray ye") prayer—asking God to send holy priests, religious, and lay workers to serve His Church. He believed that praying for vocations was essential for the Church's mission and that God would answer this prayer abundantly.

Why St. Hannibal Matters Today

In a world where children are still abandoned, orphaned, and exploited, and where vocations to priesthood and religious life are desperately needed, St. Hannibal's witness is more relevant than ever. He shows us that serving the poorest children and promoting vocations are two sides of the same mission—building God's kingdom on earth.
