Saint Januarius (San Gennaro) lived in Italy during the time of Emperor Diocletian in the third century and was the Bishop of Naples. He was imprisoned for hiding fellow Christians for the authorities and sentenced to be thrown to wild bears. Legend has it that the wild bears refused to eat him, and so he was beheaded instead. Patronage: Blood banks, Naples & volcanic eruptions.
This medal features an image of St. Januarius and the bears he was thrown to. Around the image 'SAINT JANUARIUS PRAY FOR US' is inscribed.
