Saint John of the Cross (San Juan de la Cruz) from the province of Ávila, Spain in th 16th century was a Carmelite friar. He was imprisoned by his Carmelite brothers as they opposed his reformations to the Order, and he was held under a brutal regime. During this time he wrote poems and spiritual writings that have been considered the pinnacle of spiritual Spanish literature.
