About St. Sophia the Martyr
St. Sophia (also known as Saint Sophia of Rome) was a Christian widow and martyr who lived during the 2nd century AD. Her name means "wisdom" in Greek, and she exemplified this virtue through her extraordinary faith and courage.
According to tradition, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, Sophia and her three young daughters—Faith (age 12), Hope (age 10), and Love (age 9)—were arrested for their Christian faith. The guards took her daughters one by one, from oldest to youngest, and tortured them to death before their mother's eyes, attempting to break her faith. Sophia remained steadfast, encouraging each daughter to remain faithful to Christ.
After witnessing the martyrdom of all three daughters, Sophia was permitted to bury their bodies. She remained at their graves for three days, praying and mourning, before she herself died of grief. The Church honors her as a martyr because of the spiritual torment she endured.
