About St. Veronica
St. Veronica is venerated in Catholic tradition as the compassionate woman who, moved by pity, stepped forward from the crowd as Jesus carried His cross to Calvary. She offered Him her veil to wipe the blood and sweat from His face. According to pious tradition, when Jesus returned the cloth to her, His face was miraculously imprinted upon it - creating what is known as the Veil of Veronica or the Holy Face.
While not mentioned in the canonical Gospels, this tradition has been part of Catholic devotion for centuries and is commemorated as the Sixth Station of the Cross. The name "Veronica" itself is believed to derive from the Latin "vera icon," meaning "true image."
The Sixth Station of the Cross
St. Veronica's act of compassion is commemorated as the Sixth Station in the traditional Stations of the Cross devotion: "Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus." This station reminds us to show compassion to Christ in the suffering faces of others and to seek the face of Christ in our daily lives.
