Saint Kilian was an Irish bishop who labored for the conversion of the German people in the 8th century. He was born in County Cavan, Ireland, in about 640. He was the son of nobility but abandoned a life of privilege to serve as a missionary of Christ. Germany was largely ignorant of the faith and many Irish missionaries preached to them. St. Kilian ministered to the regions of Franconia and Thuringia. He succeeded in converting Duke Gozbert of Thuringia and counseled him not to separate from his wife Geilana, who was his brother.
