During the mid-1500's Saint Charles Borromeo returned dignity to the clergy by making great changes to the diocese of Milan (and beyond) where he was appointed archbishop and cardinal.
He spent his life in the service of the Church as both administrator and influential promoter of strict adherence to a life of piety and austerity.
In reforming the clergy of the time he created many educational opportunities including the creation of new seminaries, colleges and universities, and the preparation of men for the priesthood.
Charles also created the first Sunday School for lay people.
His reforms were vast and his influence during the Counter-Reformation against the Protestant Reformation was great.
He is the patron saint of bishops and the patron saint of cardinals. His feast day is November 4th.
